My Financial Rock Bottom: $150K in Debt, No Job, No Savings, No place to live.

By @itsKimika

My mission is to help you become financially harder to break. Check out this article next Why the 50/30/20 Rule No Longer Works — And What to Use Instead  it's about a new way of organizing your money.

There was a point in my life when I had:

Nearly $150,000 in debt
A credit score I don't even like to discuss in public
Accounts in collections
No savings
No investments
No job

And about $25 in my checking account.

Not $25 after paying bills.

Not $25 in my "fun money" account.

Twenty-five dollars. Total.

Now before you assume this story starts with a shopping addiction, a gambling problem, or some elaborate financial scam...

It doesn't.

The truth is much less dramatic.

I was doing what I thought responsible adults were supposed to do.

I Followed the Script

I grew up in a single-income household in the Bronx. Nobody taught me about investing. Nobody explained how debt really worked. Nobody handed me a financial playbook.
So when it came time to build my life, I followed the script everyone else seemed to be following.
Graduate high school.
Go to college.
Take out student loans.
Go to grad school.
Take out more student loans.
Get a credit card.
Get a corporate job.
Finance a car.
Move out.
Build a life.
You know... the American Dream starter pack.
On paper, things looked fine.
I had degrees.
A decent job.
My own place.
The kind of life that makes relatives nod approvingly at holiday dinners.
The only problem?
By my mid-twenties, I was already carrying around roughly $70,000 in debt.
But I wasn't worried.
Because I had a master's degree.
And surely that would make everything work out.
Right?

The Decision That Changed Everything

Then one of my side hustles landed a $10,000 client.
And suddenly I became the proud owner of something very dangerous:
Unearned confidence.
I convinced myself this was my big break.
My "quit your job and follow your dreams" moment.
So I did.
Without a substantial savings account.
Without a real safety net.
Without a backup plan.
What I did have was a business plan template I found online and an absolutely unreasonable amount of optimism.
At the time, it felt brave.
Looking back, it might have been one of the most expensive decisions I've ever made.
Because what happened next set off a chain reaction that eventually left me with $150,000 in debt, accounts in collections, and just $25 to my name.
And that's where this story really begins.

Watch Episode One

In this video, I'm sharing exactly how everything unraveled, the mistakes I made along the way, and the lesson that ultimately changed my relationship with money forever.
Because the debt wasn't actually the biggest problem.
It was the pattern that created it.
And once I finally saw that pattern, everything started to change.
